September in New York is precarious. Coming off the heels of August heat, pre-fall days can either be gloriously crisp or swelteringly hot. This season’s NYFW landed on the latter, but street stylers made the most of it by giving pared-back looks a hint of flare.

Mirroring many of the Spring 2024 runway looks (such as Tory Burch’s neutral collection of miniskirts, blazers, and dresses and Proenza Schouler’s slew of black and white suiting), fashion week goers went back to basics with poplin button-up shirts, black trousers, tailored blazers, and midiskirts. The standout looks included last season’s Tory Burch ruched gray and black midiskirt, Khaite’s black and white silk button-up shirt, Phillip Lim’s black and white lace trim skirt, and By Malene Birger’s black and white peplum skirt. Notice a trend? It’s all about neutrals with a twist.

Below, shop 12 of our favorite looks straight from the streets of New York.

A sleek, modern approach to minimalist dressing, the stark white mini skirt paired with a sheer button-down shirt and over-the-knee boots is a perfect pre-fall look. Maryam Nassir Zadeh’s iteration on the white mini and Staud’s Aimee boots complete the look.

Tory Burch’s standout piece—the ruched skirt—from their last collection made its way to the streets this season. Pair it with a short-sleeve crewneck sweater, Ayede’s block-heeled ballerina shoes, and a pair of tortoise sunglasses.

Sea’s white fringe skirt keeps summer alive; but, when paired with Matteau’s blazer, it takes on a fresh fall feeling. Top the look off with The Row’s white Half Moon bag and Stuart Weitzman’s black pumps.

Take the black-and-white trend to a new level with Khaite’s black and white striped button-up shirt, paired with Vince’s black trousers, Dehance’s black and silver belt, and Toteme’s perfect ribbed tank.

Another iteration of the black-and-white look, a black-and-white bouclé skirt paired with a black T-shirt, is another way to master this ensemble. Mame Kuroguochi’s skirt does just the trick, and a Cos shirt and Jil Sander cuff complete the outfit.

A pair of blue and white pin-striped pants go a long way in the fall, especially when worn with a white blazer, YSL bag, and white pointed heels.

Another midi skirt, 3.1 Phillip Lim’s lace and silk cream and black number, pairs well with an oversized poplin tuxedo shirt, such as this one from Jil Sander.

Welcome the fall season with an all-black look. Mango’s suit jacket with open zip sleeves pairs perfectly with a pair of Highsport black pants. Keep the summer season alive with a final touch: a pair of black flip-flops.

Reach for wardrobe staples with Staud’s white button-down shirt and Andres Otalora’s black palazzo pants. Top off the look with a pair of Agmes’ silver earrings.

A shirtdress is always a prime option for transitional dressing—it’s light, breathable, and timeless. Róhe’s shirtdress does just the trick.

Florals for fall, crazy right? Opt for a floral blazer (this one is Peter Do, but an Alexander McQueen one will fit the bill) and a silver necklace (such as Ssense’s Martine Ali necklace).

The black and white looks continue. This time, it’s the By Malene Birger black and white peplum skirt that steals the show. Pair it with a gray tee and black strappy sandals.
